Indiana recently changed the practice of shielding cause of death notices that were posted in the Department of Health in order to facilitate digitizing state death records. But one has to ask why cause of death was ever a cause for secrecy, really. I can understand embarrassment, or shame.
Facts are facts. And the cause of death is certainly as important as the cause of life, and the cause of life has pretty much occupied center stage for our attention throughout history without much allowance for … well, now that I think about it, that whole Comstock Act thing maybe was a way of creating a little secrecy about the cause of life.
Well, no good seems to have come of either cloaks of secrecy, after all, it seems to me.
